The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce

The only Devil's Dictionary app for the iPad.

The Devil's Dictionary is one of the great works of American satire and possibly the greatest mock or pseudo-reference work of all time. Ambrose Bierce's most famous creation emerged from a collection of newspaper items and overcoming a couple of publishing false starts became what we know as as The Devil's Dictionary in 1911 (but even then took a while before it was published in something near a decent manner). Now one hundred years later, it has survived through various print and electronic incarnations to become a classic, the classic satirical dictionary.

The text used in this app is sourced from the Wikisource version found here. This version as far as we can see is based on the version found in Project Gutenberg. The only changes we have made has been to remove the first 7 entries from our version as we believe they may be still in copyright. They were not part of the original files loaded and seem to all come from 2 edits of the page for A in 2006. They seem to have been taken from The Unabridged Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce, edited by David E. Schultz and S. T. Joshi (rather than as we first thought from The Enlarged Devil's Dictionary edited by Hopkins) so we have removed them.

Now you can read Ambrose Bierce's collection of writings on the iPhone and the iPad.
